一点感触

一直都说国内学术气氛不行,到了这边才渐渐体会到之中的差别。

首先是这边对于Academic Integrity 的重视。记得上周收到学校的一封email,大意是说我还没有完成Academic Integrity Tutorial,如果不完成将在本周开始关闭我的DEN上的课程页面。这学期有两门课平时作业、讲义都是从DEN上搞的,如果关闭了还让我怎么活...遂在deadline之前专门找了时间学了一下这个教程。采用类似PPT的形式,带有语音旁白,没有听清可以反复重听,需要自己手动翻页。除了页面还包括两段教授的视频。主要内容包括为了保持academic integrity可以做和不可以做的事情,以及关于图书馆查阅文献的一些有用信息。最有意思的是教程最后还有一个quiz,而且必须答对90%以上才算通过...(第一遍答错俩题结果只答对85%...)后来想想在EE的Orientation的时候也专门强调过Academic Integrity,当时教授说你们必须这样做的原因是你们的行为代表了美国学术界的威信和声望。当时听了这话就唏嘘不已,国内人人都从自己的实际利益考虑,哪会想对学术界的影响,所以大陆的学术威望才会不如美国。

另一点与国内不同的是,不像国内搞搞什么教育大家都当耳旁风听过,这边大家都很自觉按照教导的规则行事,并且因此有较好的学习氛围(哪怕是在南加大)。一方面,Professor、TA恪尽职守。不像国内很多授课的老师,想着把进度赶完就下课走人。这边的教授会时刻关注学生理解的程度,并随时让学生打断提问。因为有这样一种理念:如果你花了时间却没有听懂,那么你的时间相当于白白浪费掉了。TA在主持Discussion也会解答很多问题,很多回答有可能是仓促的。因此经常能收到TA的email,说今天上课XX问题我的解释有问题,正确的应该是怎样的。另一方面,学生整体的学习态度比较认真。上课的时候和Professor呼应,很少有上这个课干别的事情的情况发生(倒是到目前为止我只见过在中国学生身上发生过这种事情...)。课后作业也许也有抄的情况吧,但是因为这边很重视Academic Integrity,所以相对国内要好很多倍。

写到这里,忽然想起昨天看到的一个标题,说我们这代人变“愚蠢”了,不是说我们真的变笨了,而是说在我们所获得的学习、生活条件下,我们这代人没有取得在这些条件下应有的学习成果。仔细想想,忽然发现很有道理。记得在北大看过的一个纪录片,刚刚恢复高考后的那批北大学生,因为深刻感受到了文革耽误了太多的学业,所以学习刻苦之至。记得片中采访英达说,他骑自行车都能和侧面来的人撞上,就是因为双方都在思考学习上的问题。那时的学习、生活条件要比现在艰苦许多。然而现在的很多学生呢?整天关注的是谁买了台新电脑、新手机,学校外面又新开了哪家餐馆,最近XX游戏又有什么更新了,今年秋天流行什么衣服,网上新找到什么搞笑的牛B视频(看看校内新鲜事吧...)...作业随便写写,不会的就抄抄同学的;平时不认真学,考试前突击一下背背前几年的考题;起了床、吃了饭、下了课就坐在电脑前面打游戏,买饭都是找人代劳。现在想想在国内读书的时候,有多少人能问心无愧地说:不管学得怎么样,起码我对的起国家、学校创造的学习、生活条件,对得起父母交的这份学费呢?

这样想来,无论这边学费生活费怎么贵、生活学习上怎么不方便,只要在这边好的学习氛围里面能保持一个积极的学习态度,那些都是值得的。

New World, New Start

So long...

It has been so long since I've proved myself to be someone that ain't like anybody else. Inevitably, it generally requires facts, including events, numbers, statistics, etc.  to prove this point. I used to demonstrate this to others. However, for all these years that's exactly what has been missing for me -- facts.

Now the opportunity of change has come. A new world and new chance, if made good use of, can turn into a brand-new start that I can be proud of for the rest of my life. The only question is, do I have the courage to grab this chance and face all challenges?

Hopefully I would not regret one day, for the way I have lived through these years of my life.

Optoelectronics教材的卷首语

今天碰巧看到,觉得不错就摘了下来:
